. . . and it is quite amazing the difference a few extra minutes of daylight makes -- lately, have been compelled to throw open the curtains a little earlier each morning, stay outdoors a little longer each evening, and at home, thoughts of painting all the walls spring white and scattering mirrors and lucite about every room, to hold on to the early march sunlight for as long as possible . . .
. . . and having been forever in love with love, and forever ever in love, it's no wonder that valentine's day is very nearly a national holiday around here, and perhaps the very best thing about it falling on a tuesday, is the chance to celebrate again, for there are dinner reservations also for the weekend, and for tonight, there will be champagne and other perfectly wonderful things, and however you celebrate, or not at all, wishing you so much love—the kind that overflows on everything and fills the air . . .

. . . it always seems, about this time of year, am ready to throw open the windows to the bright sunlight, in wild anticipation for springtime, and so, it is not difficult to imagine one being hopelessly drawn this perfectly romantic home, with its dusky lavender walls and pooling drapes of the same hue, its tufted linen chairs and carved settees, scalloped and gilded and mirrored accents, its florals and lucite may bring on bouts of spring fever at any moment . . .
. . . tasseled drapes and soft lighting, tufted settees and silk cushions, crisp white table cloths and silver-rimmed china, salmon pasta shell roll, served with toast, lox and caviar, freshly backed biscuits with clotted cream, tea and delicate pastries and it's champagne afternoon tea at the dorchester . . .
. . . there are few things lovelier than tuftedvelvet and that first morning cup of coffee, especially if the tufted velvet is a grandheadboard, but what if it were not a headboard at all, but actually wallpaper? [one of the best trompe-l'œil, ever, should think, and the next best thing . . . ]
. . . and if you have been reading for a while, you may remember our stay at a log cabin in the mountains, and so, was understandably delighted to happen upon this similarly designed mountain retreat -- the beamed ceilings and warm, time-worn wood, the antique and patterned rugs and grand stone fire places, all intermingled alongside tartan and plaid and pooling drapes, soft, caramel-coloured leather and velvet the shade of overcast skies, and glittery glass chandeliers, creating a perfectjuxtaposition of town & country, rustic & refined . . .
Whether you are traveling or will remain at home this Christmas, it is always thoughtful to think of those whose services you require on a regular basis, for a well-mannered traveler is always grateful for good service.
Beyond a spoken thank you, tipping is essential in many cases, and for services above and beyond, a handwritten thank you note is always an elegant and appreciative touch.
